Nagraj Popatrao Manjule’s story has noble intentions inasmuch as it tries to convey that no person is born bad, that circumstances can lead a person to take the wrong path in life, and that young impressionable minds need to be purposefully engaged as an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. However, the story just has noble intentions; beyond that, there isn’t much steam in it. Manjule’s screenplay is long-drawn and boring, forcing the audience to believe that it was written for a half-an-hour TV serial but stretched into a 178-minute film! The portion (in the second half) in which the football players struggle to get their passports seems too stretched.

Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) is an orphan who dropped out of school after his 4th grade. Now he is a content businessman running a cable TV service in Goa. He is married to Nandini (Shriya Saran), and they have two daughters, namely Anju, his adopted daughter (Ishita Dutta), a class twelve student, and Anu (Mrunal Jadhav), a class six student. His only interest is watching films. He has gained a lot of fame and support in his area for helping people out with the help of methods he learns from films.
During a nature camp which Anju attends, a hidden cell phone camera records Anju removing her clothes and showering in the bathroom. The culprit, Sameer “Sam” Deshmukh (Rishab Chadha), is the son of Inspector General of Goa Police, Meera Deshmukh (Tabu). Sam comes to blackmail Anju for sexual favors one day, turning up at her house the same night, when Nandini shows up too; she was informed by her daughter. Nandini pleads with Sam to leave their family alone, but Sam refuses to delete the video clip unless his sexual demand is fulfilled. Nandini begs him to leave Anju alone, and Sam says that he would do it on one condition: Nandini should have sex with him instead. In an attempt to break the offending cell phone, Anju takes a swing at Sam with a lead pipe, but she strikes him in the head instead, killing him immediately. They bury his body in a compost pit in the backyard, which is witnessed by Anu.
Devdas
In the 1900s, Kaushalya hears that her younger son, Devdas, is about to return home after leaving ten years ago for law school in London. She tells her neighbour, Sumitra, who is overjoyed. The latter’s daughter, Parvati aka Paro, and Devdas share a deep friendship rooted in childhood. When Devdas was sent to London, Paro had lit an oil lamp to prompt his return and never allowed it to extinguish. When Devdas returns, their friendship turned into love. The narration religiously follows the three-act structure by keeping the routine character-introduction, a guy falls for a girl love story in the first 30 minutes, revealing the transgender twist in the next 30 and showcases how the characters deal with that twist in the last hour.The major imperfection comes from the almost-perfect Ayushmann Khurrana’s filmography because he has spoiled us with his script choices. If I see this after films like Badhaai Ho, Bala and Dream Girl, I would expect a great deal of humour from it but that’s not the case here. It’s not a bland affair in the comical department, of course, but it’s not great either. Some jokes, dialogues fall flat, some hit the target. It lacks consistency as seen in Khurrana’s previous films (barring Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan). Now, I also understand the topic was sensitive this time around and playing around it would’ve been a risky proposition, but he’s the guy who made his debut as a sperm donor. So!
